San Diego Pride 2018 is just around the corner and we here at MJ Tours are beyond excited to celebrate with you. A colorful weekend full of fun festivities is coming this way! Are you excited too? The annual San Diego Pride Parade is one of the largest Pride Parades in the United States. It is estimated to attract 200,000 supporters of the LGBTQ community. We hope to see every one of your gorgeous faces there.
Back in 1974
Back in 1974 San Diego celebrated its first documented pride. While they did not have permits to march as a parade, this did not stop the community from getting together and walking for the LBGTQ community. Now, San Diego Pride is proud to be a nonprofit organization that sponsors an annual three-day celebration every July. The event features a block party in the Hillcrest area on Friday night, followed by the Pride Parade on Saturday morning, meanwhile, there is a two-day Pride Festival happening on Saturday and Sunday located in Balboa Park. All of the Pride events raise funds from the ticket sales to the cost for drinks to the exhibitor fees in order to support the LBGTQ community. It is estimated that about $2.5 million has been used to foster pride, equality, and respect for all lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender communities locally, nationally, and globally. After all, the vision for San Diego Pride is “to create a world free of prejudice and bias”. Pride Weekend is thought to be the largest civic even in the city of San Diego with more than 200 floats and a crowd of about 200,000 people!
MJ Tours is excited to be participating in this year’s San Diego 2018 Pride celebration. We have teamed up with FlavRx to bring you a rainbow filled experience inside of our top of the line cannabis tour bus. This year FlavRx released Rainbow Belts; a sweet and sour way to taste the rainbow! What could be more Pride-appropriate than these cannabis-infused rainbow gummies?
Other cannabis companies have decided to get involved and give back to the LGBTQ community this year as well. PAX has partnered with Jetty Extracts to make donations to the LGBTQ+ nonprofit, Mr. Friendly, for every purchase of a Jetty Reckless Rainbow product. Mr. Friendly is an advocacy group dedicated to helping those living with HIV/AIDS by hosting events, using social media, consulting with HIV-service agencies and selling products that help fight HIV stigma in friendly ways. Another cannabis company giving back for Pride is PLUS, a California gourmet cannabis gummy company. They have released a limited-edition Rainbow Sorbet flavored gummy. A portion of each purchase will be given to the Trevor Project. The Trevor Project is a confidential suicide hotline for LGBTQ+ youth that’s been helping to save lives since 1998. We hope to see many more partnerships between cannabis companies and the LGBTQ communities. Together we can stand against hatred and create a community of peace.
Top of the bill
Exciting news for the Pride Festival! Performing on the main stage at the Festival will be the sensational girl group, TLC. T-Boz (Tionne Watkins) and Chilli (Rozonda Thomas) will be playing on Sunday at 7:45p. The girl group started in 1990 with a third member Left Eye (Lisa Lopez), who unfortunately passed away in a car crash in 2002. The two remaining women continue to make music together as well as supporting the LBGTQ community. During an interview in 2017 when being asked “do you remember the LGBT community’s response to ‘Waterfalls’ when it first came out?”, T-Boz said, “We did a campaign for Pfizer, and there was a new cocktail out. We did seminars and it was really cool because we let it be known that there was a new drug from this company and it could help HIV/AIDS patients. They would come up to us; they felt like we were their voice. It was such an epidemic at the time, so they just felt like we were speaking for them”. She continued “We started really seeing the seriousness of it, especially when we did charity events. We got a lot of calls for charity events for AIDS benefits, so it started making a really big difference. We basically got one of our wishes through that song, because we always wanted to help change and save lives”. Now, 28 years later, TLC continues to remind us to embrace our own crazy, sexy, cool selves, gender norms be damned.
TLC is not the only hot artist celebrating Pride in San Diego this year. JoJo is back after years of being unable to release new music due to a bad record deal and is now ready to make new music as well as tour again. She is joining many local San Diego artists to support the amazing LBGTQ community on the main stage on Saturday at 8pm. Don’t miss it! Also gracing us with their appearance on the main stage will be the infamous Kameron Michaels and Asia O’Hara from the one and only RuPaul’s Drag Race. They will be preforming together on Sunday at 6:40pm. Check out the other artists who will be preforming at the Pride Festival this weekend on one of the three stages (main stage, movement stage, and mundo latino stage) at sdpride.org/lineup.
This Saturday, July 14th, the Pride Parade begins at 11am. The parade will be starting at the Hillcrest Pride flag on University Ave. and Normal St. and the parade will end at Laurel St. around 3pm where you will find the entrance to the Pride Festival! The Pride Festival will be located at Balboa Park on Saturday, July 14th, from noon – 10pm and on Sunday from 11am-9pm. The Pride Parade will be a free event while the Festival will have a general admission cover of $30 at the gate or $20 if you purchase them now at sdpride.org. We can’t wait to see you there!
