Finally! California has joined the pro-cannabis movement to legalize recreational cannabis.

This means, if you are of legal age (21+), it’s time to get the party started and visit your local dispensary. But wait! Are you aware of California’s cannabis history and how we came to have recreational use today? What does recreational cannabis even mean for you? Don’t worry; here at MJ Tours, we will educate, and elevate your cannabis experience!

California has been through a long process with cannabis starting back in 1975 when they decriminalized marijuana. In 1996, California became the first state to legalize cannabis for medical use. Despite leading the way with the legalization of medical cannabis, California did not manage to become the first recreational state.  In 2010 Proposition 19 was put to vote and unfortunately failed. This surprised many Californians, but it would not be the last push for legalization. On November 8th, 2016 Proposition 64 passed to legalize recreational use and sale of cannabis. As of January 1st, 2018 the recreational shops opened up to the public and the fun began.

Fun Fact: There are 8 states with recreational cannabis; Alaska, California, Colorado, Maine, Massachusetts, Nevada, Oregon and Washington. Washington, D.C. has also allowed the use of recreational cannabis.

Contrary to popular belief, the legalization of recreational cannabis does not mean the state has become the Wild West; you can’t just get it at the grocery store and purchase pot with your milk and eggs. In fact, there are many rules that the state must follow to be compliant as well as many new laws that you as consumer must obey. If you intend to purchase cannabis in the state of California, you must be over the age of 21 to enter a recreational licensed dispensary, otherwise, you can still apply for a medical marijuana card if you are over the age of 18 to shop in a medical dispensary. Other restrictions apply such as only being allowed 6 plants in your home and up to an ounce in your possession.

Fun Fact: an ounce of cannabis is 28 grams of flower or 8 grams of concentrate.
